The San Francisco Guide says:
The RESIDENCE OF THE UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT is a large Colonial-style house. Stanford has had but three presidents. The first, David Starr Jordan, selected by Senator and Mrs. Stanford in 1891, guided the institution through some difficult early years when, after Senator Stanford's death, the estate became involved in litigation. After Jordan's retirement in 1913, Dr. John C. Branner was president for three years. Branner was succeeded by Dr. Ray Lyman Wilbur.
Today this location, also known as The Knoll, is the home of the CCRMA, the Stanford Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics. There’s a lovely green expansive lawn in front with gardens.
