This impressive mosaic graces the interior walls of the Welcome Center and rest stop near the Iowa/Missouri border. The 500 square foot “Prairie Passage” was created with 600,000 pieces of glass tiles creating a colorful collage of Missouri history. It highlights the landscape, wildlife, culture, and people who made the history of Missouri noteworthy including Native Americans, Missouri River, Pony Express, Louis and Clark State Park, Kansas City Baseball, Kansas City Jazz, American Bison, Harry Truman, Jesse James, just to mention a few . It measures 12’ high and 44’ wide and took 5 months to piece the tiles together. It was designed by Carl and Sandra Bryant in 2009 as a way to teach visitors about Missouri’s history, culture, and landscape. A booklet telling about the mosaic is available at the information desk. While the information room has specific hours, the rest stop with the mosaic is open 24/7.
