As Quakers moved Westward, across America at the end of the 19th century, it was customary to construct an Academy to provide a site for worship and the education of their youth. Constructed by local men, using lumber they milled from trees downed by the Galveston 1900 storm, this two-story structure served as their place of worship until June 1949. The Academy also serve as their school with all grades house on the second floor until 1914. That year, a two room school house was built across the street for grades 1 to 8. In 1939 all grades were moved to a new brick building on present-day Spreading Oaks.
In 1949, at the completion of the adjacent stone church, the Academy building was dismantled. The property became and remain part of the lawn until the large stone addition to the church was made in 1998 on that site.
