A sign at the site indicates that the Jhelum was built in Liverpool England in 1849. The ship, overloaded, left Callao in Peru for Dunkirk in 1870 and rounded Cape Horn with difficulty. It came to Stanley Harbour on August 18, 1870 in sinking condition and was scuttled and remains here to this day.
Wikipedia's page for the Harbour (
visit link) mentions the Jhelum- "Jhelum - an East Indiaman, which sank in 1871, and was abandoned by its crew." but posts a different date than the sign at the site.
