On the south side of the gate to the entrance to Columbia University a 12' by 3' by 2.75' granite, allegorical, sculpture representing science stands on a 5' by 4.67' by 3' granite pedestal. The sculpture was created by Charles Keck and dedicated in 1916.

A female figure, representing letters is wearing classical robes that covers her body from the shoulders down. Her right arm is bent at a 90 degree angle across her waist and her forearm is supporting an open book. Her heft hand is holding the upper right corner of the open book.
