The park consists of Goose Island and a section of the mainland. The area was purchased by the state between 1931 and 1935 for a wintering grounds for the endangered Whooping Crane.
Among the park's features is the "Big Tree," estimated to be 2,000 years old and certified as the largest live oak in Texas.
