...the gunner has rolled up a shell and one man has climbed to the highest point to peer ahead. Beside them an officer holds a telescope in his proper left hand. This group is set to the proper right of the artillery group (in the back.) One of several statuary groups to comprise Lincon's Tomb.
Dimensions: Approx. H. 8 ft. 6 in. (7,826 lbs.).
Inscription: L. G. MEAD/AMES FOUNDRY/CHICOPEE signed Founder's mark appears.
Sixty-five old cannons were donated by the Federal Government to be melted down for casting materials for these pieces. This piece is one of six pieces on the monument done by Larkin G. Mead. The cost of this piece was $13,700 and was purchased by the State of New York. It was exhibited at the Philadelpia Centennial in 1876 before arriving in Springfield in the Spring of 1877.
