"A friendly, family-orientated pub, this 160 year old building was originally a hotel and has recently been refurbished. A lot of slate has been used in the bar, tables and floor, reflecting the local industry. Good views of one of the first wind farms in the county. Food is usually available 1200-1430, 1800-2100 daily although this should be checked by phone before making a special journey. The 'quiet pub' description is not true Fri and sat eves, and sometimes live bands provide the entertainment."

The pub is named after the tools of the trade used by the slate splitter, a trade associated with the nearby Delabole slate quarry. Roofing slate is split by hand, a traditional method that has been passed down through generations.
