Southern California water agency signs $175 million deal to buy Delta islands Bouldin Isl. Webb Tract, Holland Tract, Bacon Island, and Chipps Island. The "Delta" is a geographic area of 1,100 square miles. It is multi use land of food crops, migration areas, and recreation. IF the proposed "Tunnels Project" to send water to Southern California happens, there will be less for food production.
Too many people, limited resources. The American River,
The Mokelumne River (several forks), the Cosumnes River flow into
the Sacramento River. The San Joaquin River joins the Sacramento near Antioch in Contra Costa County.
The Delta is an estuary, with numerous channels and sloughs.
Folks who live out there don't have municipal water and treatment plants. They rely on wells, septic tanks, and propane.

Metropolitan has signed a contract to buy five Delta islands, representing the most concrete step to date in a controversial deal that has been in the works since last fall.

An expensive and temporary dam was constructed at Sutter Slough to fight salinity issues (when insufficient fresh water allows bay water to flow upstream). Messing with the ecology is dangerous and costly and lacks foresight. Sandhill cranes return to known habitats. Fishing is part of the recreational draw. Salmon, stripers migrate inland here!
