In ancient Greece and Rome a sibyl was a woman who was an oracle. "Sibyl of the Written Word" is a 13.5' by 5' by 2.5' allegorical marble sculpture created by Oronzio Maldarelli and carved in place by Pario Tommasi. It was commissioned by the Hartford Public Library in March 1957 and dedicated on August 19, 1958.

This sculpture depicts a woman wearing classical robes standing on a cloud with her left leg exposed. The cloud represents imagination. She is holding an unfurled scroll, which represents the written word, in her right hand.
