Designed by Stephen Huneck, this golden weathervane is perched over the Dog Chapel which welcomes All Creeds, All Breeds, No Dogmas Allowed. It represents a dog, a Retriever flying toward Heaven, the artist's favorite breed, with the four letters indicating the points of the compass.
The artist wanted to build a chapel in the style of an 1820s Vermont church on Dog Mountain, his mountaintop farm. He wanted it to fit into the landscape, as if it had always been there. His hard work paid off and on Memorial Day 2000 Dog Mountain was welcoming his first visitors.
The property is always open to the public even when the gallery and the Dog Chapel are closed. There are hiking trails, ponds for dogs to swim in and in the winter folks come and snowshoe with their dogs, enjoying the pristine surroundings and the spectacular views.
When you visit the Dog Chapel you are totally enveloped with messages of love. It is a very moving experience - sad, certainly, but also uplifting - to see how much everyone cherishes his or her dog. Grieving for a lost dog is one aspect of the Dog Chapel, but equally important is celebrating the joy of living and the bond between dogs and their owners.
As a dog lover and owner my self I always enjoy visiting this place.
