The Santa Fe Trail began as a commercial venture when the growing population required goods and services.
The Santa Fe Trail divided into two main sections in New Mexico, the Cimmarron Cutoff, and the Mountain Route. Smaller routes formed from these two paths to accommodate rising smaller communities.
The Santa Fe Trail New Mexico National Scenic Byway follows today's highways and roads near the original Santa Fe Trail paths.
