Oneonta Library, ... chartered in 1893, moved into the Huntington homestead in 1918. Henry E. Huntington, a railroad magnate and collector of art and rare books, was also the founder of Huntington Library in California.

"Two-story, frame Italianate style house with deep eaves and cornice with scrolled brackets; regular fenestration plan with square-headed windows and scrollwork above; porch in southwest corner of house enclosed for use as children's room and three-story addition to rear for reading rooms and stacks, pre1960; interior alterations in 1968 include dropped ceilings and wall-to-wall carpets; gazebo entrance added 1980-1981; fire exit stairwell added 1984; vinyl siding and replacement sash. Built 1880... The library was built originally as a house for Solon and Harriet Huntington by Solon's brother Collis, in 1880. It cost $7,000."

"Huntington Memorial Library is the largest library in Otsego County, New York and is located in the City of Oneonta."
"On February 9, 1893, Huntington Memorial Library was granted a charter from the State of New York....In 1909, the library owned 9,000 books and had a circulation of 32,278. At the library board meeting of November 1917, a letter from Henry E. Huntington was received proposing that he donate his old family homestead as a permanent home for the library and endow it with a trust fund for its support. The only thing he asked in return was that the library be renamed “The Huntington Memorial Library” to honor his parents."
