"Monuments to members of Digby family, 2 between south aisle and nave, to Sir John Digby and his wife, 1269. Chest tombs with large effigies: the knight is in chain mail with crossed legs and drawn sword. His wife lies with one arm by her side, one hand clutching a handkerchief, and has a very flat face with incised features. Both retain some fragments of colour.
Against the south wall is the tomb of Sir Everard Digby, d.1509. Heavily sculpted knight's effigy on base with shields in quatrefoils with inscription."

The Digby family may have been founded during the Norman conquest of England, when William the Conqueror was accompanied by Almar, who settled at Tilton in Rutland. Sir John Digby (d. 1269) served on two crusades. His wife was Arabella.
"SIR EVERARD, the eldest son of Everard Digby, Lord of Tilton, and Drystoke, was progenitor to the families of Drystoke, in tbe county of Rutland, and Sandon, in the county of Stafford. He was Sheriff of the former county in 1459, 1486, and 1499; and from the 25th to tbe 38th years of Henry VI. inclusive, its representative in parliament. He died in 1509, and was buried under a tomb in the church of Tilton"

Apparently these Digby's are ancestors to a certain Sir Everard Digby (c. 1578 – 30 January 1606), a member of the group of provincial English Catholics who planned the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. He met a rather grizzly end.....
