This monument was initially set in April of 1855 by John W. Garretson. It is located on a isolated hill on the west bank of the Rio Grande near the current town of San Acacia. From this point, he ran the Principal Meridian south to the Mexican border and north 96 miles. He then created the east-west Baseline 21.5 miles to the west and 24 miles to the east. The USGS re-established the monument in 1956.

The Initial Point lies on private land owned in 2016 by Corky Herkenhoff who provided us with permission to visit the monument.
