In 2015 Wollondilly Council approved a community request to name a parcel of open space in Thirlmere, Kangaroo March Reserve and signage placed at the reserve and at the beginning of the walking track to the area explaining why it was called Kangaroo March Reserve.
The march was a significant part of Australian and Wollondilly history.
The signage honours the men from Wagga Wagga who, 100 years ago, marched through Hume and onto Sydney to head overseas to fight in World War I.
Of the recruitment marches set up in 1915, the Kangaroo March was the longest at 520 kilometres.
The route was from Wagga through Junee, Cootamundra, Wallendbeen, Nubba, Harden, Murrumburrah, Binalong, Bowning, Yass, Jerrawa, Gunning, Goulburn, Marulan, villages in the Southern Highlands, Picton and on to Campbelltown.
It recruited 222 men along the way.
To retain its rural character, no recruits were taken on after Campbelltown. People from villages across Hume turned out in droves to cheer the men on and their generosity sustained the men for the march.
On September 5, 2015 a Kangaroo March Committee departed Wagga Wagga on a 36-day 520km Kangaroo Recruitment March to Campbelltown arriving on October 10.
Descendants of some of the Kangaroos will joined the progress along the country roads of southern NSW.
The Kangaroo March Committee comprised of citizens who live adjacent to the route of the 1915 Kangaroo Recruiting March from Wagga Wagga to Campbelltown.
