Story of a powder horn..."the entire episode of its history had been written in an early history called The Annals of Binghamton of 1840 by J. B. Wilkinson."
"This powder horn is adorned with ornate carvings that date from the French & Indian Wars. Much like scrimshaw, this horn includes etchings of a fort, maps, pictures of weapons and other items. This powder horn was used as a presentation piece by a British soldier to a fairly high-level member of the Iroquois Confederacy...During the Sullivan-Clinton Campaign in 1779,...Planning on destroying Otsiningo, located where the park by the same name exists today — the troops found the village already in flames. It was set afire by its own residents, who took their own belongings, and left ahead of the soldiers’ arrival...In the burning longhouses, one soldier, John LaGrange, saw this powder horn left among the smoke and cinders of the settlement. He picked it up and put it in his haversack (like a backpack)....About 20 years ago, the Broome County Historical Society received a call from Mrs. LaGrange. Her husband had passed away, and her children were not as interested in the powder horn as she. She asked whether the society would want to take the horn and give it a good home"
