Graig Flach, Associate Pastor for Lake Grove Presbyterian Church gave the invocation. Speaking at the dedication, Mayor Jack Hoffman mentioned that the Blue Star Marker had special significance for him because he has a son serving in the military in Iraq.

Jan Iseli, Oregon Blue Star Marker state chairman, presented a history of the marker followed by remarks from Karen Brown, president, Oregon State Federation of Garden Clubs and Muriel Pagel, director, Clackamas District Garden Clubs. Assistant Chief Larry Goff of the Lake Oswego Fire Department accepted the marker, which is the first in Lake Oswego.

The Blue Star Memorial Program started in 1944 with the planting of 8,000 dogwood trees as a living memorial to veterans of World War II. In 1945 state garden clubs adopted the Blue Star Highway markers that cover thousands of miles across the continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii. After 9-11 police and firemen were added to those being honored with markers at civic locations across the country. The Blue Star Marker dedicated on Sept.17 was placed in front of the fire station and can be seen from Jean Road.
