The building is heritage listed with the Office of Environment & Heritage NSW Government. The statement of significance (visit link) description is:

"The post office was a significant building in the development of Captains Flat and one of the few buildings extant from the Victorian era. It makes a pleasing contribution to the street and displays attractive 19th century architectural detailing". It was built in 1898 by Charles Bruce.

Captains Flat is an historic gold mining village with the former Lake George gold mine standing prominently behind the village.
