What was the Montjuïc Fun fair for over 30 years is now a large green space covered with abundant and very Mediterranean vegetation. Halfway between a forest park and a city garden, the Gardens of Joan Brossa have characteristics of both, especially those typical of a forest. The park has many interesting species of trees and four lovely statues of famous entertainers from the former Fun fair dotted around the gardens which are statues of Catalan clown Charlie Rivel, Charlie Chaplin, the Barcelona flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya and Barcelona gymnast Joaquim Blume.
Carmen Amaya (2 November 1913 – 19 November 1963) was a flamenco Gypsy dancer (Romani) and singer, of Indian origin, born in the Somorrostro slum of Barcelona, Spain. She has been called "the greatest Spanish gypsy dancer of her generation" and "the most extraordinary personality of all time in flamenco dance". In 1929, she made her debut in Paris with noted Spanish dancer Raquel Meller, to warm acclaim and admiration of her dancing skills. She then performed at the Folies Bergère. Amaya was invited by president Franklin Roosevelt to dance in the White House in 1944, and also by Harry S. Truman in 1953.
The larger than life-size statue depicts Carmen Amaya performing her art in a long flamenco dress. It is named "A Carmen Amaya" .
