The first military engagements of the American Revolution took place on Lexington Green. A monument marks the line of the Minutemen and the orders from the leader of the Minute Men, Captain John Parker, that began the revolution.

On the morning of April 19, 1775 about about eighty Minutemen from the Lexington militia assembled on the Lexington Green to prevent a contingent of British Regulars from advancing onto Concord, MA. A British officer rode forward and demanded that the assembled militia to disperse.
A stone monument containing the relief image of a musket and powder horn, marks the position of the militia and is the words attributed to Captain Parker on that day. It is inscribed:
LINE OF THE MINUTE MEN
APRIL 19, 1775
STAND YOUR GROUND
DON'T FIRE UNLESS FIRED UPON
BUT IF THEY MEAN TO HAVE A WAR
LET IT BEGIN HERE
CAPTAIN PARKER
A bronze plaque on the back of the stone is inscribed:
