EN: The Church of St. Peter and Paul is located on a hill in the north of the municipality on the border with Dulliken.
The church is the oldest in the region. Its origins date back to the 8th century. In 1036, the church and the village named after it was mentioned for the first time in a document.
The current building is a new construction of 1671 with repairs and enlargements that have been carried out after a fire in 1812.
The adjacent rectory dates back to 1679 and is largely preserved in its original state.
In the 1870s, the church played an important role in the church history of Switzerland. From the opposition to the Pope dogmas decided at the first Vatican Council, a secession from the Roman Catholic Church originated, the Christian-Catholic Church of Switzerland. This development began with Pastor Paulin Gschwind in Starrkirchen-Wil; the Church is christian-catholic since 1874.
DE: Die Kirche St. Peter und Paul befindet sich auf einem Hügel im Norden der Gemeinde an der Grenze zu Dulliken.
Die Kirche ist die älteste der Region. Ihre Ursprünge reichen ins 8. Jahrhundert zurück. Im Jahr 1036 wurde sie und das nach ihr benannte Dorf das erstemal urkundlich erwähnt.
Das heutige Bauwerk ist ein Neubau von 1671 mit Reparaturen und Vergrösserungen, die nach einem Brand im Jahr 1812 ausgeführt wurden.
Das benachbarte Pfarrhaus stammt aus dem Jahr 1679 und ist weit gehend in seinem Originalzustand erhalten.
In den 1870er Jahren spielte die Kirche eine wichtige Rolle in der Kirchengeschichte der Schweiz. Aus dem Widerstand gegen die am ersten Vatikanischen Konzil beschlossenen Papstdogmen entstand eine Abspaltung der römisch-katholischen Kirche, die christkatholische Kirche der Schweiz. Diese Entwicklung begann mit Pfarrer Paulin Gschwind in Starrkirchen-Wil; die Kirche ist seit 1874 christkatholisch.
