Established in 1848, Fort Martin Scott was one of the first US Army posts on the Texas frontier. By 1866, the fort had declined in usefulness, and was abandoned.
Johann Braeutigam purchased the remains of the old fort property in 1870, and hand-dug this waymarked well near the guardhouse (whoch he tuned into a home for his family. In later years, the lip of the well was encased in concrete and a hand-pump was added for conveience. The property remained in the Braeutigam family until 1959, when the city of Fredericksburg bought the old fort, and started restoring it.
