Fort martin Scott was one of the earliest forts on the then western frontier of Texas when it was established in 1848. By 1866 it was surplus, not even useful for protection against Indians. The US Army abandoned Fort Scott. Its buildings and lands were purchased by Johann Braeutigham in 1870.

In 1959, the City of Fredericksburg purchased the old fort property from the heirs of Johnann Braeutigham, and restored the fort buildings which had not been altered much in the intervening 90 years.

The fort is preserved and open today and a living history museum of life on the Texas frontier in the 1850s.

This covered wagon greets visitors at the southern entrance to the Fort.
