A cut benchmark on the door pillar, west face of St Mary's church tower, Sydrstone.

"The current form of St Mary's is a west tower, nave and chancel. However, it began life in the early medieval period as a cruciform church, with both aisles and transepts that have since been demolished, although the south arcade remains. The present round west tower dates to the 13th century, as does the former south door and possible the chancel. The north arcade was remade in the 14th century, when the east wall of the chancel was rebuilt and a splendid four-light window with curvilinear tracery installed, possibly the best in the county. Inside is an important, if dour, tomb of 1605."
