On September 8, 1863, as Union warships attempted to navigate up the Sabine Pass between Texas and Louisiana, the ships were fired upon, and some sunk, by defenders at Fort Griffin along the pass under the leadership of Lt. Dick Dowling. A monument at the battlefield remembers Lt. Dowling and the men of Company F Texas Heavy Artillery.

The monument is topped with a statue of Dowling and lists his men's names and their activity here.
