One of the few memorials to Union casualties in Texas, the monument remembers those killed in the battle of Sabine Pass in 1863. Located at the Sabine Pass Battlefield Park, 6100 Dick Dowling Drive, Sabine Pass, TX

Following the destruction from Hurricane Rita in 2005, the Sabine Pass Battlefield Park was rebuilt, reorganized and renamed. A local effort from the citizens of the area, a memorial was added to recognized the Union soldiers and sailors who lost their lives in the battle in 1863 when Union boats attempted to sail up the Sabine Pass between Texas and Louisiana only to encounter bombardment from Fort Griffin along the pass.

Twenty-Five African-American men fought here on the behalf of the Union, but their names are unrecorded. Twenty-two fought on board of the USS Clifton and three on the USS Sachem. All were missing and presumed dead. We hereby recall their lives and remember their deaths
