This area was to become Worcester's leading mill area. Originally settled by Irish immigrants in the 1840's, it became known as "Little Sweden" in the 1870's with the influx of new immigrants. At the time is was one of the largest Swedish communities in the US. In the 1920's there was a general de-industrialization in Worcester as the last iron works closed in the 1970's in favor of foreign manufacturing.
