The terra cotta ornamentation is on the Smithsonian list of sculpture.
"Terra cotta figures decorate the southern and eastern pediments of a building. The eastern pediment depicts Indian lore. The southern pediment depicts the Arts and Sciences. Figures and objects depicted in the southern pediment include a wood-burning locomotive, a farmer plowing, Hermes holding a caduceus, the goddess of Liberty with a star over her head, an eagle with outspread wings below Liberty, a cannon and stack of cannon balls, a goddess of the arts, an easel, a bust with sculptor's tools, a globe and a chemical still."
Elmira is known as the place Mark Twain spent summers; he married a local girl and is buried in a cemetery in Elmira. Elmira was also the site of a Civil War prison camp and the current home of the Elmira Correctional Facility. It is also the home of Elmira College, now co-ed but originally one of the early colleges for women.
