This tall obelisk was erected by the NSW Government in 1888 as a memorial to the 81 men & boys who were killed in a gas explosion at the Bulli colliery on 23 March 1887.

The memorial lists the names of those who were killed in the 1887 disaster as well as the 1965 disaster. The victims of the 1887 disaster are buried in three cemeteries nearby - Bulli, Corrimal & Woonona. They left 150 orphans & 50 widows. A memorial service is held at the obelisk each year on 23 March.

The obelisk is built of Scottish granite & is surrounded by an iron fence.
