A supply depot during WW II, named for BG Wm. F Castle, who led bombing missions over Europe and died as a result of one in 1944. Castle was later known as a Strategic Air Command base.

The base is currently an active flight line and pilot instruction field. A variety of County agencies maintain offices here. University of Calif. Merced campus and a number of health clinics. A State Office of Emergency Services and a sheriffs station.
Deactivated after 1990. The parade grounds remain with a horseshoe of state flags.
