This Christian cross stands on top of a volcanic outcrop created after a n eruption in 1430.

It is known as El Peñón del Fraile, named after a monk who in the early eighteenth century often climbed to the top of the rock to be isolated in prayer.
These days it is much easier get to the top of the rock after Genovese Luis Lavaggi created steps leading to the top of the rock in 1813. At the same time he installed the cross.
In 1855 the cross was enclosed under a cupola created as a bandstand which was renovated in 2003 with a new bronze dome.
