He understood the value and the advantage of air dropping paratroops behind enemy lines to disrupt, demoralize, and detract the enemy forces from the frontal assault by the main force. Although he was aware of the value for these troops, he had to convince the Department of Army, the President, and Congress of his plan. General Lee was given permission to initate a test group to prove the worthiness of his idea. Everything needed to train the troops had to be manufactured or other goods adapted for their use. One good example of his ingenuity, was using a football helmet for a headgear during jumps. After proving the worth of the special warriors, it has been proven over and again. Who are you? Airborne, How far? ALL THE WAY!

In his home town of Dunn, NC, a museum was established to celebrate his military career as well as his life before and after military service. It is located at 209 W Divine St, Dunn, NC 28334.
