" In the early months of the year 1927, there were three fires within the Village of Port Dickinson, two were of a minor nature, one might well have been considered serious. Village Officials and concerned citizens became protection conscious. The only fire fighting eqiupment available was stored in a barn on Grant Street, which proved to be a hand drawn high wheeled hose reel purchased in 1902 and relegated to supplying water for the skating rink in the rear of the Port Dickinson School.
These same concered townsmen assembled in January 1928 on the upper floor of the old Redmen's Hall over the Cigar Store and Market at the corner of Mill and Chenango Street. This venerable landmark began to creak, and the occupants beat a hasty retreat, reassemblying in the school gymnasium. The efforts brought fruition, Clarence H. Boyce and Linnington D. Burtis were elected President and Chief Engineer, and the Incorporated Company chartered May 2, 1928."
"Engine 99 is a 100% volunteer daytime on duty engine crew. It was set up to provide a quick response of a fully capable engine crew during daytime hours while man power levels are down. Engine 99 opperates in the central portion of Broome County, NY including the fire districts of Chenango(66), Chenango Bridge(39), Chenango Forks(44), Choconut Center(57), Hillcrest(55), Port Dickinson(35), Port Crane (37) and Prospect Terrace(63). While in service Engine 99 responds to any fire calls, motor vehicle accidents, hazardous conditions, and CPR's in all seven of these districts as well as ems calls within the hosting departments district. The hosting department can supply the entire crew or simply the driver for the day. Often times the crew is made up of members from several departments. The crew can also respond outside the 99 district if requested by a non participating department."
