Benjamin Mason was born in 1828 and came to Western Australia with his parents a few years later,after school he did an apprenticeship as a carpenter and went on to own shops in the City . However by 1866 he had constructed his own timber mill in the hills above Perth and soon over 100 men were employed at the mill, In 1870 Mason formed a partnership with Francis Bird, two years later they had built a horse drawn wooden railway line from the mill to the Canning River to be transported by barge to Fremantle for shipping. He died in 1893 aged 65
