In Plymouth, nestled among the hills leading to the grand White Mountains, is Plymouth State University.
Plymouth State is integrated with the center of the town, uphill from the downtown district. There are several roads that lead through the campus, and several places to park - just be sure that these are either public parking spots or not reserved for faculty or other limitations.
According to a sign, this location was first Holmes Academy from 1826 to 1841. In 1870, the town purchased the property and buildings and donated them to the state to form a normal school. It became Plymouth Teachers College in 1939, and Plymouth State University in 2003.
Today, the school offers more than teaching degrees. It offers 50 different majors and 70 minors. Programs include: "education, business, humanities, arts, and the natural and social sciences; centers and institutes for meteorology, the environment, New Hampshire studies, and rural partnerships." It is also competes in NCAA athletics as Division III.
The campus is long and relatively narrow as it sits on the hillside. On the south side is the Boyd Science Center. In the center is a grassy area with several buildings, including a clock tower that rises well above the other buildings. Downhill from there is the theatre. Further north are dormitories. Across the river are athletic facilities.
Plymouth State is part of the University System of the state of New Hampshire.
