First church built in 1911. The New York National Guard came to McAllen in 1916 to protect the border from Poncho Villa. As many as 5 masses were required on Sunday due to the large number of soldiers.

The wooden church and rectory burned to the ground in October 1924. Monsignor Connally who had been a chaplain with the NY National Guard was then head of the Extension Society and donated money to help rebuild the church he remembered from his time in the Rio Grande Valley.

In 1925 the cornerstone of the new church was laid. Church was completed April 11, 1926.
