The choice of a mascot for COWS Creamery was definitely a no-brainer - a Holstein cow. Her name is Bessie and the creamery has named at least one of their ice cream flavors in her honor - the Messie Bessie, consisting of chocolate ice cream, moo crunch, Oroe cookie & English toffee. Unfortunately, we didn't try that one on our visit.
Bessie stands out front of the COWS Creamery, welcoming all who enter with a silent moo and a somewhat sad expression.
COWS is by far the best ice cream in Canada. It was difficult to decide which of their 26+ flavors to pick and all their cones are handmade.
COWS offers a self guided tour of their factory, no admission is charged to watch how their ice cream, cheeses and T-shirts are made.
COWS began to make ice cream in 1983 with an old-fashioned recipe that originated in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island. In fact, our secret COWS recipe dates back to the time of Anne of Green Gables and contains the same all-natural ingredients that were enjoyed by the children of Avonlea.
In a very short time the demand for COWS ice cream and products increased dramatically, and COWS quickly became a Prince Edward Island symbol as identifiable as Anne herself! Despite the growth that COWS has experienced, the same old-fashioned ingredients are still used today when making the 32+ flavors that are produced by COWS Inc. in Charlottetown. Each COWS ice cream is served in a handmade waffle cone, created one at a time, right at the counter.
