Text from the Plaque:
The Story
This soldier's squad was pinned down by heavy enemy machine gun fire from two bunkers. After three members of his squad had been killed and two wounded, he realized that the rest of the squad was in danger of being killed. "The Warrior" charged the machine guns. Emptying his M-1 rifle and throwing hand grenades, he destroyed the first bunker. Throwing his last grenade, he fell to the ground mortally wounded. This last grenade you see leaving his hand destroyed the second bunker thus saving the lives of his comrades. His actions allowed his company to continue the attack. This courageous and brave act exemplifies the actions of the 3,440 recipients of the highest award, The Congressional Medal of Honor. This metal is bestowed by the United States to members of its armed forces for acts above and beyond the call of duty against hostile forces.
