A 25' high by 5' square painted, iron, palmetto tree was sculpted by Christopher Werner to honor the men of the South Carolina Palmetto Regiment who fought in the Mexican War. The trunk of the tree is colored bronze and the leaves are bright green.
The front of the base is inscribed:
SOUTH CAROLINA
TO
HER SONS
OF THE
PALMETTO REGIMENT
WHO FELL
IN THE
WAR WITH MEXICO
ANNO DOMINO
1847
The other three sides contain plaques which list the names of soldiers of the Palmetto Regiment who were killed in the Mexican War.
