The African-American History Monument was commissioned by the state of South Carolina. It contains a a large relief sculpture that consists of 12 bronze panels depicting the history of African-Americans since their arrival in America as slaves until the present day. The sculpture was created by Ed Dwight and installed on the grounds of the South Carolina State Capitol on March 29, 2001.
Two granite wall form a semicircle on either side of a central granite obelisk. The walls rise from 6' to 8' on the left side and descend from 8' to 6' on the opposite side. On each wall is a bronze relief sculpture divided into six panels. Each panel depicts a different aspect of the African-American experience in chronological order.
Left side: slave auction block, slaves being transported on a ship, slaves at labor, slaves escaping, African-American Union soldiers from South Carolina, emancipation.
Right side: reconstruction, Jim Crow era, migration north, beginnings of integration, civil rights era, and African Americans integrated into society as astronauts, judges, legislators, Civil Rights leaders, athletes, business and political leaders.
