Welcome to the Quarry;
This Historic Marker near to St Chad's Church, is located at the main entrance to The Quarry Park & Dingle Gardens, Shrewsbury, County Town of Shropshire, Great Britain.

The Information on the Historic Marker asks & answers the question "When is a Quarry not a Quarry?"
Parts of the parkland were once quarried, for Stone & Clay.
The wet quarry, now the Dingle, provided Red Sandstone, & the dry quarry provided clay for making bricks.
The Marker also features a You Are Here Map, listing the attractions within the park.

The Quarry;
"Shrewsbury is fortunate to have its own 29-acre parkland known as The Quarry. Throughout the year you’ll find a host events taking place at The Quarry Park, including The Carnival, Shrewsbury Regatta and Dragon Boat Racing & Shrewsbury Flower Show, to name just a few.
At its centre lies The Dingle, a formal floral masterpiece created by world renowned gardener Percy Thrower of Blue Peter fame - during his 28 years here as our Parks Superintendent. It’s a beautiful sunken garden landscaped with alpine borders, colourful bedding plants, shrubbery and water features.

The Dingle;
"A centrepiece to the park is 'The Dingle', a former stone quarry, but now a landscaped sunken garden. Between 1324 and 1588 it was known as the Wet or Water Quarry because it was liable to flood. It was quarried for both stone and clay. The project to clear out the Dingle and then plant it was funded by the Shropshire Horticultural Society, with the ornamental gardens opened in 1879, featuring many flower beds and borders, with ponds and fountains. Although there are still formal planted beds, in recent years the planting scheme has become more naturalistic in style, reflecting modern tastes." Text Source; (visit link) & (visit link)
