Although villages named after large old world places are common in Ontario, small towns named after US states are rare.
How Wyoming got its name is somewhat unclear. The first record of the name was when the GWR built the London to Sarnia line and established Wyoming Station in 1856. It is generally believed that the railway named the place however one of the earliest families to settle the area, the Browns, were American and some claim they were responsible for naming the place Wyoming. Yet a third theory is that the Chippewas in the area (who knew the place as "Arvoca" meaning "Meeting Place") were known as "Moonooming" and that the early settlers construed this as "Wyoming"
The Village of Wyoming amalagated with the surrounding township of Plympton in 2001 - so officially it's now The Town of Plympton-Wyoming - not that too many people call it that.
