This statue of a mother with her children is a monument of gratitude and a present of France to the people of Switzerland.

EN: This statue stands on the eastern edge of Schützenmattpark of Basel. The larger than life sculpture depicts a mother holding her baby in her hands. On the sides of the base there are four toddlers who raise their arms into the air. The inscription on the base reads: "A la Suisse généreuse, la France reconaissante / 1939-1945" (the grateful France to the generous Switzerland / 1939-1945).
The statue was created by Georges Salendre (1890-1985). It was from France to Switzerland and a monument of gratitude for the many French children who found refuge in Switzerland during the Second World War. It was inaugurated in the presence of the President of the French National Assembly in 1948.
DE: Diese Statue steht am östlichen Rand des Schützenmattparks von Basel. Die überlebensgrosse Skulptur stellt eine Mutter dar, die ihr Kleinkind in den Händen hält. An den Seiten des Sockels stehen je vier Kleinkinder, die ihre Arme in die Höhe recken. Die Inschrift auf dem Sockel lautet: "A la Suisse généreuse, la France reconaissante / 1939-1945" (das dankbare Frankreich, der grosszügigen Schweiz / 1939-1945).
Die Statue wurde von Georges Salendre (1890-1985) geschaffen. Sie wurde der Schweiz von Frankreich geschenkt als Denkmal der Dankbarkeit für die vielen französischen Kinder, die während des zweiten Weltkriegs in der Schweiz Zuflucht fanden. Sie wurde 1948 im Beisein des Präsidenten der französischen Nationalversammlung eingeweiht.
