The Salt and the Verde rivers join in the far East Valley area of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The Verde is a fairly young river, descending from the Northern Arizona area. The Salt River is much older and drains from the Northeastern area of the state. At the point of confluence the Salt moves over a block of bedrock which forces it to the North to meet the Verde. At high water, the Salt River flows over the bedrock dam and both rivers contribute jointly. The Salt River is controlled by a number of dams and its flow varies depending upon the demand for water and electricity.
