Der Grundstein wurde 1903 gelegt, die Einweihung war am 17.5.1908 in Anwesenheit vom Kaiserpaar Wilhelm II., der den Bau förderte.
Die Bauleitung hatte der Architekt Franz Schwechten, der durch die Berliner Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche bekannt wurde.
In der Kirche sind zwei Orgeln und sechs Glocken.
Das Innere der Kirche erinnert an die Hagia Sophia und orthodoxe Traditionen.
