The station was constructed for the first railroad in the nation to haul anthracite coal by steam locomotive from Tamaqua to the Schuylkill Canal in Port Clinton. The 21 mile line opened in 1831 and is still in operation today. It is currently owned by Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad.
