This general store caught my eye when passing through this small, unincorporated community of Lookingglass so I had to stop and take a look. I'm happy I did because I had no idea just how old this small convenience store was. Although the interior has been remodeled extensively, the exterior still contains the vintage 'old store' appearance. Inside, a painting hangs on a shelf above the merchandise and there is a writeup on the checkout counter that reads:
Lookingglass StoreMr. Hoy Flourney in 1846 visited the valley where the Lookingglass Store is now looking. He named the valley for its lush green grass that reflected the sun like a mirror.
The store, built of logs notched together and nailed with large square nails, opened in 1852 and remains the oldest business in Douglas County. The store also served as a post office from 1871 until 1942.
The Lookingglass Store has been owned and operated since 1987 by James and Beverly Hooten. They have maintained the nostalgic flavor of the store while offering residents and tourists goods and services that meet today's needs.
Also noticed hanging in the back of the store was a couple of newspaper article clippings, one of which highlighted a personal visit by nationally-known newsman David Brinkley, who visited this store, as well as other small towns in Oregon in 1974. This store contains much history and once housed a gasoline station and small auto repair facility next door.
