The plaque attached to the front of the first jail in Clinton reads:

CLINTON'S FIRST JAIL-CIRCA 1901

ORIGINALLY LOCATED ON WEST PITTS STREET

LATER MOVED TO GEORGE A.COPELAND PROPERTY

AND USED AS A STORAGE BUILDING.

DONATED BY MRS.ETHEL COPELAND CORNWALL

This first jail is located on the Clinton Museum property that just happens to be right next to the Clinton Public Safety building that houses the Clinton Police Department.
