Popularly called “the pencil”, the obelisk was inaugurated in 1936 in homage to Francesc Pi i Margall the second president of the First Spanish Republic.
After the Civil War, on January 13, 1939, the pro-Franco authorities withdrew the statue and the medallion which were replaced by an Allegory of Victory, work of Frederic Marès, and by a Franco shield with an eagle, and they renamed the plaza, Victory Square.
In 1981 the square was renamed to its current name. With the Spanish transition to democracy, the monument became meaningless, and the Barcelona City Council substituted the plate in memory of General Franco's victory by another in homage to the royal household and renamed the intersection of both avenues as Plaza Juan Carlos I. The name change was approved on February 27, 1981.
The Franco shield was removed in 1979 while the statue of Victory was retired in 2011. Currently the obelisk is the only monument in the plaza and it is devoid of any specific commitment.
